Community pharmacies deliver 10.5 million NHS blood pressure checks
Data released by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) shows that community pharmacies in England have delivered more than 10.5 million blood pressure checks under the national NHS hypertension case-finding service. The figures, obtained by The Pharmacist, indicate that contractors completed approximately 10.6 million checks in total between October 2021 and June 2026.
The service was introduced to identify individuals with undiagnosed high blood pressure and refer them for appropriate clinical follow-up. According to the reported figures, delivery of the programme has taken place amid controversial alterations to the service specification. While the full impact of these regulatory adjustments remains subject to sector debate, the volume of delivered consultations highlights the significant role assigned to community pharmacy teams in delivering cardiovascular screening across England.
The high throughput demonstrates the substantial scale of preventative clinical screening delivered across primary care networks since the launch of the scheme. For distance-selling pharmacies and partner healthcare brands, these figures highlight ongoing patient engagement with NHS-commissioned clinical pathways, although any future shifts in service specifications could require operators to reassess their remote screening and referral workflows.
