Independent prescribing rollout poorly planned, pharmacy leaders warn
Pharmacy sector leaders have raised significant concerns regarding the rollout of new independent prescribing services across the sector, warning that the national implementation has been poorly planned. According to industry leadership, the wider expansion of prescribing responsibilities continues to be hindered by unresolved issues surrounding remuneration and digital infrastructure.
Dr Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive of the Independent Pharmacies Association (IPA), highlighted that the transition lacks the practical backing required to allow pharmacist prescribing to fulfil its intended potential. Expressing disappointment with the implementation process, Dr Hannbeck noted that without adequate planning and dedicated support structures, pharmacy businesses will face persistent barriers when attempting to embed these clinical services into day-to-day operations.
The central points of contention remain the absence of sustainable funding models and the lack of robust IT systems capable of handling clinical prescribing workflows smoothly. Pharmacy organisations emphasise that widespread adoption relies heavily on resolving these core infrastructure questions, particularly in relation to how prescribers will be reimbursed and how digital platforms will integrate to maintain safe patient care.
For UK online pharmacies and digital health brands, these ongoing implementation delays and infrastructure questions indicate that clear operational frameworks for expanded independent prescribing may take additional time to solidify.
