PCN establishes pharmacist-led asthma optimisation service
A primary care network in Warwickshire has introduced a pharmacist-led asthma optimisation service designed to enhance respiratory care delivery across local practices. Nuneaton and Bedworth Primary Care Network (PCN) established the initiative to translate the 2024 joint British Thoracic Society (BTS), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) asthma guideline into routine clinical practice.
Led by PCN pharmacist Simran Obhi, the service focuses on pairing patient education with structured medicines optimisation. The network identified an operational opportunity to apply the updated national guidance directly within community care, using pharmacist-led interventions to deliver personalised reviews and support patients in managing their prescribed inhalers and medicines effectively.
The service demonstrates how primary care organisations are deploying clinical pharmacists to lead chronic disease management and drive guideline compliance. By embedding the 2024 recommendations into everyday patient interactions, the programme aims to ensure that treatment regimens remain clinically appropriate while improving overall patient understanding and self-management.
For UK online pharmacies and digital health platforms, this model highlights the potential need to align remote asthma reviews and prescribing protocols with the joint BTS, NICE, and SIGN standards.
