Spending watchdog considers UK-US pharma deal inquiry
The National Audit Office (NAO) is considering whether to launch a formal investigation into the pharmaceutical deal agreed between the United Kingdom and the United States. The national spending watchdog confirmed that it will carefully evaluate the potential for scrutinising the bilateral arrangement following formal representations from several influential parliamentary committees. These cross-party committees have called on the spending watchdog to initiate a rapid inquiry into the pact.
According to the initial disclosures regarding the trade arrangement, the terms agreed with the US secured zero tariffs on pharmaceutical products. However, specific operational details, broader terms and comprehensive documentation surrounding the wider deal remain limited at this stage. The NAO has not yet determined whether a formal investigation will take place, nor has it published any formal terms of reference or target dates for a decision. At present, the watchdog is reviewing the requests submitted by parliamentarians to establish if an audit or formal review should be launched.
Until the NAO decides whether to open an investigation, existing trading and regulatory arrangements remain fully in place. For UK online pharmacies and digital health brands, the development currently carries no immediate operational impact, though any future investigation could eventually lead to greater parliamentary scrutiny of cross-border pharmaceutical trade terms.
