Sync-RX vs a custom build
The short answer
- Build if the software itself is your product and you will fund a team to own it for the long run.
- Choose Sync-RX if you want to compete on treatments, brand and service, and want the regulated workflow handled by a platform built for it.
What a custom build has to cover
The storefront is the easy part. A regulated online supply business also needs:
- Assessments per treatment, with answers that flag risk to a prescriber.
- A prescriber queue, an audit trail and a secure way to sign prescriptions.
- Identity checks, a route to dispensing and delivery tracking back to the patient.
- Repeats and subscriptions that cannot ship without a fresh clinical check.
- Medicine data that stays consistent with NHS coding and product information.
Each of these is a project, and each has to be maintained when the regulator, a supplier or an integration changes.
Where custom builds tend to struggle
Regulatory change
When guidance moves, as it did with the GPhC's February 2025 guidance for online prescribing, every change lands on your own roadmap. On Sync-RX it is the platform's job to keep up. See GPhC online prescribing requirements.
Knowledge in one head
Custom systems often depend on the developer or agency that built them. If they leave, the business inherits a system nobody fully understands.
Selling the business
Buyers look closely at the platform. A bespoke stack held together by plugins is harder to value and harder to hand over than a supported platform with clean records.

FAQ
Is a custom build ever the right answer?
Yes, when the core of your business is something no platform does and you have an in-house team to own it for years. For most brands and pharmacies the clinical workflow is not the differentiator, the treatment, brand and service are.
Will I lose control of my brand on Sync-RX?
No. The storefront, assessments, emails and patient portal carry your brand. You can also keep your existing storefront and connect it through Shopify, the API or outbound webhooks.
Can I still build my own features on top?
Yes. Sync-RX has an API and outbound webhooks, so your team can build what is genuinely unique to you and leave the regulated workflow to the platform.
Who owns the patient data?
You do. Patient records, orders and history belong to your business and can be exported.
We already have a custom build. Can we move?
Yes. The migration page explains what transfers, what drives the timeline and how the switch runs without a gap in service.
